Bad Taste

It's hard to review a movie like "Bad Taste". You can look at it objectively,
strictly as a piece of cinema. In which case, it's a poorly made splatter-fest
with a lucid plot, over produced sound effects, a truck load of over dubbing
and even more cliches. Or you can take it for what it is, a movie made by a
seventeen year old on weekends over the course of three years for $11,000.
If you consider the latter, "Bad Taste" is a great film. What kind of movie
would you make at seventeen? Would it be still in release and talked about
today? Probably not. That's what make this film good. It's the fact that Peter Jackson
(and you can see why he was given the "Lord of the Rings" franchise) could do so much with
so little at such a young age. I'm not saying that this is a great film, I'm just saying,
in context, it holds up.
One thing that does stand out is the make-up effects. For that low
of a budget, to have special effects produced that well is astonishing! But, ultimately,
I have to grade this film as a whole. It's crude and mistakes gore for comedy most of
the time, but it's also well shot and produced. All this said, Peter Jackson's debut is
quite good. In the world of main stream cinema, it falters. But who cares about main
stream cinema... Derek KICKS ASS!
